Spotlight on Scarlett Entertainment’s masters of metamorphoses - Paul and Charlene Murphy!
The UK based couple performs and produces an impressive number of shows; including Broadway, Parisian, Pantomime, Pirates and Circus themed productions. They have been thrilling our clients around the world for almost three years now, so we decided to look behind the artists’ masks and ask them some more about what they do…
1. Paul and Charlene, you are producing and performing a lot of different shows. How do you come up with the inspiration?
We like to keep up to date with what is popular and we also like to cater for all age groups. As we produce a lot of bespoke shows, we are always being asked for different things which keeps our ideas fresh. We take a lot of our inspiration from movies, TV programs and stage shows. We feel that taking time to watch these is important as a production company.
2. Who or what inspired you to first become a performer?
We are both huge Musical Theatre fans and grew up watching all the movie musicals; from the MGM greats such as 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Singing in the Rain' to the likes of 'The Rocky Horror Show' and 'Sweeney Todd'. We try to visit London as often as possible and I think between us, we have seen every West End show there is! The people that inspired us both to become performers are all associated with musical theatre, such as Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra.
3. Which of your shows do you enjoy most?
As Musical Theatre fans we both love performing our 'Broadway Spectacular' show. It's such a great show with so many variations! There are so many songs to choose from which is great as the client can choose which shows they would like us to include. We also love performing our pantomimes and Children's shows. We love to see the reaction on the children's faces when they see all the colourful characters.
4. Talking of children, you perform a lot of children’s entertainment – do children make a tougher audience than adults?
No, in fact they're a lot easier to perform for! They have no expectations like adults do, plus they have that wonderful, youthful innocence where they believe that the characters are real and embrace the magic of theatre.
5. Your shows include many top voices and first class dancers - how did you meet all these great artists?
We are extremely lucky to have such fabulous performers working for us. During our time in the business we have met some amazing talents from all over the UK, so we know who to call upon should we require a specific kind of performer. We hold auditions at the beginning of the year in search of local talent and from that we came across some fabulous singers and dancers who are now working for us on a regular basis.
6. What is it like being on stage?
There's nothing quite like it! We are extremely lucky to experience many different stages performing at various events around the world, therefore every experience is different. When you first step out on to a stage it can sometimes be overwhelming, but as the adrenalin kicks in it can be the most wonderful experience.
7. Many of your shows have a comedy element – when did you first realize that you enjoyed comedy?
Purely by accident! We don't profess to be comedians in any way! But you tend to drop in a few lines of comedy without even realising it! The part of the Ringmaster within our 'Parisian Spectacular' show is a comical part anyway and Paul tends to keep this character fresh by varying his comedy to suit the audience. In our variety style shows we use many established comedians to perform sets around the song and dance elements.
8. What is the most exciting event Scarlett Entertainment has booked you for?
There are so many! But I think we would both have to say that performing our Children's shows at the Bahrain Formula1 Grand Prix was an amazing experience! It was a real honour to work alongside some of the world’s most talented entertainers...and meeting the racing drivers was a great bonus!
9. How has your life changed since you started working with Scarlett Entertainment?
We have been lucky enough to work with Scarlett Entertainment for some years now, and during that time we have performed at some amazing events both here in the UK and around the world. We have seen the company grow into what it is now, the leading destination entertainment specialists. We have also grown with their help and we are forever grateful for their continued support and amazing opportunities.
10. If you had to describe what you do in three words - what would they be?
As a company - Provide Spectacular Shows! Personally - Make People Smile!
11. What are your future plans? Are there new shows and ideas that you are working on?
We are always working on new ideas. We are currently working on some new children's shows for the World Endurance Championships in Bahrain for this November. We have some new shows in development for 2014 including 'Pop Party Spectacular' to include songs from the greatest pop stars of today! And 'High School Spectacular' - A tribute to the greatest high school musicals such as ‘Grease’, ‘High School Musical’, ‘Glee’ and ‘Hairspray’. Plus we also plan to revamp our 'Pirate Spectacular' show to coincide with the release of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie!
